You should check your car before a road trip to ensure that nothing goes wrong and there’s little chance of getting stranded. Regularly, most people only really drive their car for short periods at once. The typical driving frequency does not need regular maintenance and mechanic checkups. However, road trips do require a thorough inspection. Before you take off on a long drive, do certain things to ensure your ride is safe and enjoyable. Not only do you need auto insurance for your vehicle, but you also must ensure that it will make the long drive. You need to know why preparing your vehicle before a road trip is essential.

Is it Necessary to Check your Car Before a Road Trip?

Longer commutes can bring up more maintenance issues. You don’t want to wait and be stuck on the road when complications arise. Can your car handle the long drive? It can hopefully run a long campaign without extensive repairs if it is in good running condition. How familiar are you with the car? How old is it? Has it been adequately maintained in its lifespan so far? These are all factors you will have to consider when determining the likelihood of any problems arising. Regardless, it is essential to get it checked before a road trip. You can ask a mechanic to inspect your vehicle for regular maintenance and any issues that may arise during the journey.

You must do what you can to avoid getting stranded on the road with car problems. Don’t just assume your car is in good order. Only your mechanic can tell you this with certainty. Have your vehicle inspected two-three weeks before your road trip to allow the mechanic ample time to fix any problems. If your trip is exceptionally long, giving your mechanic enough time is much more critical.

A Deeper Look into the Why

While you most likely take your car to your mechanic for regular maintenance, getting it inspected before a trip will allow you to determine any problems that can arise, specifically in longer commutes, and help prepare your car in time. The main reasons why you should have your car checked before a road trip:

  • Tires Check
  • Brakes Check
  • Air Conditioning Check
  • Fluids Check (Power steering, brake, transmission, and windshield washer)
  • Adjust the Steering and Suspension

Ensuring that these critical components are in order can bring peace of mind before you hit the road. You can never be sure your vehicle is safe for a road trip unless you get professional verification. Also, ensure you prepare yourself with a spare tire, spare tire tool kit, jumper cables, emergency blankets, and a first aid kit.

Taking Breaks

The amount of time you should drive on a road trip depends on various factors. Very experienced drivers can make a long distance before taking a break. Likewise, those with previous road trip experience will be more prepared for what to expect. Those with less experience need to take more frequent breaks. Generally, it is best to try to drive less than eight hours a day and make stops every two hours, but more experienced drivers can push it to 10-12 hours a day, with breaks every three hours.

Ideally, multiple drivers would be able to alternate turns to make a long distance in a shorter amount of time. You will also need to consider what the weather will be like for your road trip. Poor road quality means more issues can arise, and it is essential to drive slower, therefore increasing the time it takes to reach your destination.

It is wise to allow this rest for your vehicle on your road trip, even if it is all set from a mechanical perspective. Note that frequent acceleration and braking are much harsher on your car than continuous, consistent driving on the highway. Always pay attention to the temperature gauge for signs of engine overheating. With signs of heating, immediately try to stop and give your vehicle some rest. If driving continuously in hot temperatures, your engine may overheat and need a break.
