Driving in the harsh elements of winter presents a variety of challenges for you and your vehicle. Therefore, it pays off to be prepared and cautious this winter season. In addition to protecting your vehicle with a custom-tailored MO Auto Insurance policy, remember the following advice.

Don’t procrastinate on servicing your car.

Enduring a breakdown in the summer is far less severe than breaking down in the dead of winter. Bad hoses, belts, and spark plugs can end in disaster if you procrastinate on fixing them. Further, keep an eye on your tire pressure. Tire pressure drops about 1 pound per 10 degrees. This means that if you haven’t checked it since the sweltering heat of summer, your pressure is likely low and can compromise the handling and safety of the vehicle.

Check your battery.

Car Talk explains that your mechanic should check the battery, charging system, and belts. Your battery can leave you stranded simply because it’s old and lousy. Or it could leave you stranded because your charging system isn’t working well, and the battery isn’t getting charged properly. Experts recommend getting the biggest battery that will fit in your car to prevent you from being stranded- especially when your car needs the extra help to start in the freezing temperatures of winter.

Invest in winter windshield wipers.

Heavy, rubber coated windshield wipers will prevent ice and snow from collecting on the blade. They are an inexpensive feature that will save you a headache in the long run.

Get snow tires.

When snow is prevalent in your area, it’s wise to invest in snow tires. While all four snow tires are recommended, two will do the trick if you’re on a tight budget. You can also purchase heavier rims to prevent the hassle of trading snow and spring tires throughout the year!
